| iv just been reading some thing iv thought was right for some time now, that is that the average space to park a car is just not wide enough to allow a car to be parked side by side with others parked, opening the door often results in the door banging the door of the next car and not leaving the driver or passenger much room to get out or in for that matter often resulting in scratch's to the paint work a study by Halfords that I read said that despite the average car growing in size as manufacturers strive to offer more interior space crash protection and comfort the department for Transport rules governing car park space size have remained the same since 1994 the width of cars has increased by an average of 16% over the same period making the average car 2" wider than the 1.80mm (5ft.11") minimum parking space, thats 40mm smaller than a Ford Focus and making it incapable of accommodating a B.M.W.3 Series measuring over two metres (6ft.7") but car park operators looking to maximise visitor volumes and revenue, there is little incentive for them to exceed the recommended minimum size requirements, the research found that Supermarkets were reported as the worst offenders by 38% of drivers, followed by shopping centres 29% and railway stations 18% no wonder some times tempers get a little frayed when a driver thinks some one has deliberately parked inconsiderately, well now we know is it the same in the U.S.A. and else were I wonder, as for here in the U.K. and as a driver I would like to know when the parking spot minimum size is to be updated to accommodate the modern car size and save car paint work and driver frustration. | |

| I know and it's odd isn't it ? But the thing is there is a flip side to it.
Because of that and the mad rush in parking lots where people tend to become ill minded in their driving manoeuvres and for whatever the reasons one mainly that of being lazy I assume ,they tend to want to park as close to the doors of those stores as all possible.
Now than in view of all the lunacy in all those shopping center parking lots and the fact that I don't mind geeting a little walking exercise in at all, I always drive on to the ends of the parking lots and take two spaces fer meself ! I haven't as of yet received any complaints over the years and I assume that is because all those lazies couldn't care less about a car what takes up two parking spaces that far out into the end zones so very far away from the entrance doors !

| In answer to yer question ,indeed yes it is a problem. The shopping centers and supermarket chains that build the biggist stores with plenty of parking space are thouse that do the most volume business-in fact by their own research parking lots are the key factor to packing consumers into their stores. They try to divide off the lots into compact car spaces and larger spaces for the full size auto or truck-thing is nobody pays attention to the compact car designations ! In smaller strip malls you will likely find all spaces are designated compact cars or far too small a space to accomodate even a funky mopeg ! | |

| I'm not disagreeing - but where you have to pay to park - more spaces = more revenue. | |

My old man worked at Longbridge during the early 70s. Though i never met him i heard all the stories and believe me they are true! LOL Im loyal to my country but im not with stupid:lol:

| When you think about it the cars were designed badly looked badly and made badly. So at least they were consistent! | |

| I went to a concert in Manchester earlier this year, and although booked and paid in advance for parking, it was horrendous once we got there. It was a nightmare. I had to park in this space that put my driving skills to the test I can tell thee. They must have been expecting us to arrive on a skateboard! The best bit was yet to come mind, when non of us could get out the doors after placing myself bang on central, I then had to manouvre fwd again to let 3 of me mates out, reverse back into the space, then climb over into the back seat and get out through the boot. we were in hysterics laughing, which made the whole business much worse. I landed almost face first onto the tarmac, I dredded to think later, if anyone saw us on CCTV. OMG I looked like I'd had a skin full, and I was the driver! I kept a close eye on crimewatch for a few months after that |

| Yup that'll be me alright. Remember your folks wise words-Clean underwear just in case you get knocked down. Well it has to cover all eventualities now. Incl climbing out the boot of your car. |
